Chiroptera

Based on on PIC technology in combination with fiber/Grin technology.

Problem:
Current multi-axis displacement and position sensors are bulky, complex, and hard to install. They rely on discrete optical components that need precise alignment, making them unsuitable for compact setups or harsh environments like vacuum conditions.

Solution:
PhotonFirst has developed a prototype sensor system based on integrated photonics (PIC) combined with Grin lens fiber technology. This system replaces existing relative distance sensors and can be upgraded to absolute distance measurement. It offers high precision without the need for mirrors or accurate alignment, enabling easy installation on X, Y, Z stages—even in vacuum environments.

Technology Highlights:

  • Integrated photonics sensor platform
  • Grin lens fiber for long-travel, high-performance sensing
  • Miniaturized, stable, and easy-to-install
  • TRL 5 prototype available
  • Functions accurately on reflective surfaces without polished mirrors

Potential Markets:

  • X, Y, Z stages and linear motors
  • Aerospace & defense
  • Research and scientific instruments
  • Medical devices

Impact & Validation:

  • Boosts manufacturing efficiency and sustainability
  • Provides extreme precision in challenging environments
  • Prototype tested and validated

The position is based at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, a leading hub for innovation, and you will work closely with HighTechXL’s  venture building program to accelerate the technology from lab to market.

PhotonFirst is seeking entrepreneurial individuals with strong optical system design and development experience to join the project.
