Broos Bakens was born in what later became known as the Brainport Region of the Netherlands, and moved still further south in the country to study at Maastricht University. His experience at the international university broadened his horizons and inspired him to start working in a dynamic and international environment. He moved to Rotterdam to begin his career at EY (formerly Ernst & Young), and then in 2008, he took the bold step of moving to Hong Kong. He arrived as the world was turning upside down, just two weeks after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy. The upside of his unpaid leave at this point was that he was able to travel Asia extensively, an experience which ignited his passion for photography and discovering new things.
He returned to the Brainport Region in 2010, where he co-founded the EYnovation™ initiative at EY, supporting ambitious startups and scale-ups on their journey to market leadership. In 2013, he again engaged his entrepreneurial talents and co-founded HighTechXL. His personal goal is to support at least one startup or scale-up in creating a successful IPO (and beyond, of course).
Broos speaks Dutch, English, and German, and feels most relaxed and at home when he is enjoying the waters of Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia with his scuba diving gear on his back.
